What is the double bounce rule?

A pickleball rule requiring the ball to bounce once on the service side and once on the receiving side before any player may hit a volley.

In pickleball, the double bounce rule mandates that after the serve, the ball must bounce one time on the receiver's side of the court and the return must bounce one time on the server's side before either player can hit a volley (striking the ball in the air without letting it bounce). This means the first two shots of every rally must result in bounces.

The rule exists to prevent the serving team from gaining an unfair advantage by moving immediately to the net. Without it, a strong server could dominate by serving and rushing to volley the return at close range. By requiring both sides to wait for a bounce, the rule levels the playing field and encourages longer, more strategic rallies rather than quick put-aways at the net.

Understanding the double bounce rule is essential for anyone playing on pickleball courts in the Klang Valley. It affects shot selection, court positioning, and the rhythm of play. Players must learn to let their serve bounce on the opponent's side and allow their return of serve to bounce on their own side before attempting their first volley. Beginners often struggle with this constraint, but it becomes natural with practice and shapes the tactical nature of the game.
